Ground cover plants are good alternatives to turfgrasses in some locations. They provide a variety of textures and color, help reduce soil erosion, and can serve as a transition between turf areas and shrub or flower borders. Consider ground cover plants for areas where watering and mowing are difficult, that require extra maintenance, or that are unsuitable for grass due to exposure. Xeriscape landscaping or, simply, "xeriscaping," by definition is landscaping designed specifically for areas that are susceptible to drought, or for properties where water conservation is practiced. Derived from the Greek xeros meaning "dry," the term means literally "dry landscape.".

Xeriscaping: Retrofit Your Yard; Xeriscaping: Trees and Shrubs; For recommendations on the best flowers for Colorado’s climate, the CSU Extension’s book Best Perennials for the Rocky Mountains and High Plains notes which perennials are recommended for xeriscape gardens. Also available for checkout is the DVD Xeriscaping: A Great Choice. Water conservation - use of xeriscape and other drought-tolerant landscaping - common interest communities - special districts. Section 1 of the act augments an existing law that establishes the right of unit owners in common interest communities to use water-efficient landscaping, subject to reasonable aesthetic standards, by specifically extending the same policy to limited common elements.
